My Friend Paco
These pillows are good friends, fun and “a little eccentric”.
Text: Ana Dias Ferreira
Some people make lists of what they are looking for in a better half, Maria Figueiredo preferred to make a list of what they are looking for in a brand. She sat down with a sheet in front of her and asked the fatal question: “If my brand were a person, what characteristics would it have?” Several adjectives appeared on the page: “creative”, “exuberant”, “friend”, “fun”, “a little eccentric”. All together gave a name, born in Portugal but full of salero: My Friend Paco.
Like good friends, Paco didn’t need a lot of time to feel at home. Arrived in July 2016 in the form of pillows. It is Maria Figueiredo who designs them, and there are already dozens of them – some hand embroidered in Viseu, others printed in Lisbon, some in velvet, others in linen, square, rectangular and even round. “What I really like to do is create illustrations and graphic designs”, says the communication designer, who decided to launch under her own name after working at Mambo Unlimited Ideas and at the Roof Design Studio. These designs – horses, ostriches, cats, swans and geometric patterns, among many other examples – are what guarantee the eccentricity promised to the pillows, in a catalog that has grown in the meantime and also includes scarves, suitcases and rugs.
