The use of wood, stone and olive-green tones has been thought carefully. The first wine hotel in the Vinhos Verdes region, Fernando Coelho’s architectural project, merges with the surrounding nature, including the mantle of vineyards that unites the different buildings of the property. The main structure, recovered from an old manor house, welcomes the reception, the restaurant, the wine bar and also the spa and the indoor and outdoor pools.
In all, there are 29 original rooms and 16 newer units that occupy an area of 1500 square meters (some have a terrace, private gardens and also swimming pool). Added to that, an apartment, installed in the old granar.
Torn windows and minimalist décor by designer Paulo Lobo are features common to all accommodation spaces. More showy is the sculpture suspended next to the reception: 366 vine leaves were carved in wood with faces drawn in honor of the workers who once ploughed these lands. Another concern is environmental sustainability, with solar panels ensuring the use of renewable energies and electric vehicles to transport customers.
And because Monverde is owned by the producer Quinta da Lixa, created in 1986, most of the house’s wines are highlighted in the restaurant’s wine cellar and also in the tastings.
