By car or train – the Barqueiros station is only 500 meters away – you can reach Quinta de São Bernardo and you may no longer want to leave. With a tradition of vineyards and wine since 1912, the farm was converted into a hotel in 2016 by one of the owner’s grandchildren, the architect Diogo Monteiro.
Despite the property leaning against the train line, this is one of the few in the area that is not crossed by the train – between the house and the river there is only vineyard.
With only seven bedrooms and two suites (with private pool), the surrounding landscape invite you to just rest and contemplate the view. Every now and then a boat passes through the river or you hear the train, which runs right above the main house.
The swimming pool merges with the landscape, of green and blue tones, between the terraces of vineyards and the waters of the river. The more adventurous can even take a few strokes in the Douro or try one of the options to explore the surroundings: kayaks or paddle boards. Bicycles are also available for guests to pedal the trails between the vineyards. For wine lovers, it is possible to pay a visit to the winery and have various tastings.
During the day, the pool bar service is ideal to enjoy a light meal between dives. In the late afternoon, the terrace over the river invites you to relax while enjoying a glass of wine, preferably produced on the farm. Dinner can also be served outside, on warmer nights, or inside, in the winter garden, always with the privileged view over the slopes of the Douro.
The concept of the restaurant is farm to table and every night there is a special menu prepared by the chef, which can be accompanied by the best wines of the house.
The hotel also has a spa, several rooms and interior nooks for the colder months and a beautiful glass-enclosed greenhouse, next to the pool, which hosts meals and small private events.
