Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira was already an entrepreneur before the word even existed and during her tenure she was responsible for roughly 30 farms in the Douro region. Vallado’s was one of them and is highlighted by remaining at the hands of the family, more specifically her great-grandchildren, up to this day.
All visits to the winery begin with the life story of the famous Ferreirinha and are included with the booking, amongts the wine tasking of five wines at the end. In addition to being a recognized producer, Quinta do Vallado also houses a wine hotel, divided by two buildings three centuries apart.
In the original building, the family home, you may find a beautifully bright orange facade that immediately jumps in sight. This building contains five rooms in a more classic decor, with flirts in shale and headboards in antique hand-painted wood. In the modern building completed in 2012 and all in shale, wood and concrete, are the remaining eight bedrooms, and also the living room with two fireplaces and leather chairs, the library filled with books and wine magazines, and also the restaurant with a terrace covered by the shade of the vineyard itself (there are also constant water sprays on warmer days).
Simultaneous to the construction of the new building, and also signed by architect Francisco Vieira de Campos, the winery is modern but integrated into the landscape, because it is entirely covered with shale. All production uses gravity, and visits take place in the same direction – from the terrace to the basement, there are several dramatic descents guaranteed through the concrete tunnels.
The path to the pool allows you to admire part of the generous vegetable garden, and that is also where the spa, the glazed gym and the original bar are located, in an old port wine kite. Through several signposted trails, it is also possible to climb to the Devesas viewpoint, go down to the Corgo River – a tributary of the Douro that passes closer to the hotel – or simply stroll through the old vineyards.
