Two sisters created a handmade leather goods brand in honor of their father.
Text: Mariana Abreu Garcia
It was in 2017 that the sisters Ana and Sara Mateus took over the small leather goods factory that their father had left them, with almost 40 years of history, and decided to found a brand to continue their work. António, Handmade Story, came to bring tradition to life, on the one hand, but also to create a new approach.
The pillars of the brand are sustainability, product durability and design timelessness. There are suitcases, wallets, purses, backpacks, waist bags, briefcases, card holders and clutches. All in cowhide with vegetable tanning, “just like the father used to do”. Each piece is designed by Ana and takes between three to five hours to be produced, passing through five pairs of hands, each with its function, which goes from cutting to equalizing, facing, engraving, assembling and molding.
There are two distinct lines: the Nordic-inspired Timeless Line, with simple lines and classic colors; and the Special Edition, “an expression of emotions” through the always natural color, with the application of paint by hand with a speckled effect, in the style of Jackson Pollock. In any case, the pieces are named after the Mateus family. Among the bestsellers are João, Ana Isabel, Maria and Joana.
