Bisarro

Painted black by fire, Bisarro combines the technique of Bisalhães with a contemporary design.

Text: Catarina Homem Marques

Imagine picking up a tea service, putting it in a handcrafted wood-fired oven and setting everything on fire. It may not be something to do alone at home, but it is the process that gives rise to the typical black pottery of Bisalhães (Vila Real municipality). Since 2015, it has also been used to produce Bisarro’s items, a brand that causes a “formal break with the traditional”, but only to prove that the same ancient technique can exist with “contemporary shapes adjusted to the national market”, as he explains Renato Rio Costa, one of the three founding designers and currently responsible for the project.
